A favourite among those eyeing modified cars based on Holden vehicles, HSV, or Holden Special Vehicles, was set up in 1987 as a joint venture. Little did the team realise at the time that the brand would put its insignia on some of the most successful racing names across the local motorsports industry, with its first car, the Holden VL Commodore SS (Group A SV), going on to become a Bathurst 1000 winner. However, the brand also took on responsibility for remanufacturing and converting some of Chevrolet’s left-hand-drive vehicles imported down under, giving it a specialty focus as a manufacturer of high-end cars. Of course, with the Holden brand being retired locally some years ago, and GM discontinuing the brand in 2021, General Motors established a new subsidiary to tackle the conversion of these left-hand-drive imports. With that, General Motors Speciality Vehicles (GMSV) was born, with the brand importing and distributing Chevrolet vehicles across Australasia, leveraging the expertise of HSV’s parent company, Walkinshaw Automotive Group.
