Holden Trax
It’s a highly affordable small-size SUV that Holden is banking on to turn its sales around, and on paper it looks the goods. But does the Trax also have what it takes in a real world environment to challenge others like the Honda HR-V, Suzuki Vitara or Mazda CX-3? Straight off the bat, the first thing that will make an impression is the striking appearance of this five-seat crossover. Despite the budget pricing, the Trax is headlined by an impressive infotainment system, parking sensors, auto headlights, alloy wheels, as well as hill start and descent assistance. The eager 1.4L turbo motor provides good acceleration, while all variants offer fluid steering and a solid presence in corners. High riding seats, as well as an encouraging level of head room provide great visibility from the front and rear, so your perspective of the road will take on a different light while coasting around. Importantly, Holden has kept the interior dash clean and simple, yet still managed to nail the increasingly useful aspect that is smartphone integration. For a very modest sum, this is one SUV that deserves its high praise.

Car companies are scrambling to introduce small SUVs. So why is the Holden Trax, one of the pioneers of the segment, not selling as well as it once did? Sales of the Trax have hit the brakes – down by a third this year in one of the few booming segments of the market. Introduced in 2013 – six years ago – the Holden Trax was one of the first compact city SUVs...

The Holden Trax baby SUV was one of first to arrive in the segment, leading the way for open-minded Aussies ready to jump into a vehicle with high-rise status and enough room to still walk around it in the garage. It arrived six years ago, but has since been overrun in the same category it helped establish, beaten in sales by baby SUVs like the Mitsubishi AS...

The Trax is a front-wheel drive small SUV and the LS is the base-spec variant.  Our tester – a MY19 LS with a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and six-speed automatic transmission – has a listed price of $24,490 drive away. The Trax LS is available with a five-speed manual gearbox, but it’s matched to a 1.8-litre non-turbo petrol four-cylin...

It’s a tough segment these days, the small SUV category, and the Trax has been playing in it for a long time now. Does it still have what it takes to keep up with the pack? The Holden Trax was one of the first modern compact SUVs to enter the market, but, with the current generation having gone on sale way back in 2013, the Trax’s time in showrooms now works...
