Although the Equinox was introduced in Australia as recently as 2016/17, the car is no longer being produced for Australia due to Holden's exit from the local new car market. General Motors retired the brand from down under due to a number of factors, including the impact of foreign exchange rates, high manufacturing costs, and the limited yet ultra competitive state of the domestic car market. Having been exiting right-hand drive markets for several years, GM said the viability of the smaller Australian market was no longer attractive.
The Holden Equinox was produced in Mexico, at the General Motors Ramos plant in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila. As an interesting fact, the Equinox was designed entirely in America, albeit the assembly of right-hand drive units destined for Australia was done in Mexico, where the Equinox was customised for our domestic roads and highways. This meant adjustments to the suspension tuning, tyres, steering, among other facets. Holden sought a more dynamic ride compared with the US-oriented Chevrolet Equinox, which offered a softer feel on the road.
Not quite unfortunately, the Holden Equinox is a five-door SUV-style wagon with seating for up to five. Keep in mind as well, the Equinox is now only available via the second-hand market, so your options for a seven seater are even broader. What's more, the Equinox is considered a mid-size SUV, so it doesn't quite have the natural space to accommodate seven occupants. Some of the alternatives you might want to scope out, whether used or new, include the Isuzu MU-X, Haval H6, Mazda CX-9, Kia Sorento and Hyundai Palisade.

The Holden Equinox seems to be often forgotten in a heavily populated segment, so after spending six months with it, is it worth considering? After six months and over 6000km, we will be saying goodbye to ‘Pablo’, the 2019 Holden Equinox LTZ AWD from the CarAdvice long-term test fleet. Over this time, the medium SUV has clocked around 7000km on the highway,...
View ReviewThe medium SUV segment is on a seemingly inexorable growth curve, and Holden has a serious player in the form of the new Holden Equinox to slug it out with the likes of the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4. I've just spent a couple of weeks carting myself and the family across all parts of Victoria in the LS+ variant of the Equinox, and it's perfor...
View ReviewYou might not think right now is the best time to buy a Holden, what with the announcement from General Motors about closing down its Aussie operations at the end of 2020. That’s understandable but side-stepping around the Equinox could see you miss out on what is a practical, comfortable and safe mid-sized SUV. You can also bet on some heavily discounted de...

View ReviewThe repo man looked nothing like I expected. In my mind these quaint folk who come to take back your car and other possessions when you default on a loan tend to be burly blokes, wearing chunky jewellery and over-sized leather jackets who speak in Cockney rhyming slang. But this repo man was a well-dressed youngster from the Holden head office who politely a...
