Haval made the decision to phase out the H8 SUV locally from the end of 2018, which means it has been some years since this vehicle was sold across the Australian new car market. As part of a refresh across its line-up, Haval has made a number of changes to the vehicles it sells down under. New car buyers now have the choice between four SUV options, including the compact H2, mid-sized H6 and Jolion, as well as a full-size seven seater in the H9.
Yes, Haval vehicles are designed and manufactured by GWM Group, which is China's largest SUV and ute maker. GWM Group is parent company to a number of subsidiaries, including some of those that are marketed as individual brands down under, including Great Wall, and Haval. Nonetheless, GWM Group has cemented a first-class name for vehicles in its home market, with the brand recognised as the leading ute brand for over 20 years, and with its success now spanning internationally, with over 4 million vehicle sales and counting.
Sources suggest that the word Haval was originally derived from an interpretation of the English translation of the Haval name in Chinese, which was "Harfu". By direct translation, this ended up being "Hover", however, once the marketing crew got their hands on it, the name was adapted to Haval, which was considered as a combination of the words "have" and "value". As you can see, the meaning is simple in hindsight, but its origins are a little more complicated.
