It may be one of the most affordable 4x4 double-cab utes on the market, but a highlight of the Great Wall Steed was its towing capacity for much of its early life, although that is in retrospect now that the model has been refreshed as part of the GWM line-up. The Steed originally came with a braked towing capacity of up to 2.5 tonnes, and an unbraked towing capacity of 750 kilograms. As part of the latest iteration, the Steed is now rate at up to 1700kg braked and 750kg unbraked, whereas the Great Wall Cannon ute has become the workhorse in the auto-maker's line-up.
While Great Wall has developed its commercial and engineering acumen in recent years, the Chinese auto-maker has long relied on a partnership with foreign companies to complement its own capabilities. As a result, for much of its history, Great Wall has been using petrol engines bought under licence from Mitsubishi, although its diesel engines have long been an in-house production drawing on Great Wall's design and manufacturing know-how.
When it comes to vehicles produced by Great Wall, major improvements have been made over the years. Historically, however, Great Wall cars have often struggled to meet the highest standards for build quality, with reliability and longevity sometimes cited as an issue. Naturally, new car buyers will be happy to save a small fortune on the purchase price of a Great Wall, but you should also keep in mind that often translates into cars being made to fit a budget. And with that in mind, it's not uncommon to hear of mechanical problems, as well as issues with parts supply. If you're looking for a dependable vehicle to last hundreds of thousands of kilometres, a number of other brands have proven themselves worthy, but a Great Wall still has its place as a shorter-term vehicle for several years.
The 4x2 Steed, like its 4x4 stablemate, is available only as a dual-cab ute, but it does offer a choice of 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel (the only engine offered in the 4x4), or with a 2.4-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine. Our test vehicle was equipped with the petrol engine, which is only available with a five-speed manual (the diesel version comes with...
View ReviewGreat Wall Motors has returned to Australia after a long hiatus with a new cut-price workhorse ute called the Steed, designed to compete against used HiLuxes, Rangers and Tritons in the booming light commercial market. The company is a name familiar to many Australians, given it blazed a trail. With more than 45,000 utes and SUVs sold here over about six yea...
