The biggest difference between a C3 and C3 Aircross is the size of the two vehicles. The former is effectively a hatchback, offering a smaller body size. On the other hand, the C3 Aircross is a slightly larger crossover SUV. It is approximately 16cm longer and taller than the standard C3, which gives it a more upright stance, as well as a greater sense of spaciousness inside the cabin. The dynamics change a little due to this difference, but the mechanical underpinnings of the two models are the same.
While no longer sold in Australia, previous iterations of the Citroen C3 Aircross were with an automatic drivetrain that drives the front wheels only. In fact, you can't find a manual option, even if you wanted one. Back to the auto gearbox, which is a six-speed auto. This fine piece of equipment is particularly efficient, offering slick, precise changes that make the C3 Aircross feel effortless to drive. On the road this car feels smooth and planted, and a large part of that is thanks to the wonderful transmission unit Citroen has mated with the Euro-6-compliant 1.2-litre turbo petrol motor.
The 'Aircross' name doesn't have a specific meaning. At least, not to our knowledge, or one that has been widely reported. Nonetheless, it does make reference to the body type of this lovely car, so that is the logical starting point in terms of understanding the name. The Aircross is a subcompact crossover SUV, so the name really draws inspiration from the crossover element. But with its own quirky and funky take on the genre, you can see why Citroen jazzed up the name as well.
