BMW X1
With SUV sales now accounting for as much as half of BMW’s total sales in Australia, the X1 represents an entry-level opportunity to own a vehicle from this dynamic range. Sourcing inspiration from the Mini, the X1 is available via a variety of cars that differ by engine power and drivetrain. Each however, comes with roof rails, leather trim, auto parking, reversing camera, parking sensors, sat-nav, smartphone integration and advanced safety technology. At the top of the pile, the xDrive 25i boasts AWD functionality, plus a 4-cylinder 2L turbo motor mated to an eight-speed auto transmission. By and large however, most of the range operates as front-wheel drive, with the proven success of the premium models brought to the market by Mini. Material selection in the cabin is outstanding, with BMW utilising a select choice of textures juxtaposed by the computer intelligence built into the dash. And of course, BMW’s elegant touch extends to a sense of airiness inside, despite this being a compact SUV. As an affordable entry into the German car maker’s SUV range, the XE1 will impress.

The BMW X1 seems to answer a question: do SUV buyers prioritise driving dynamics over interior space? Ever since the larger, second-generation X1 was released locally in 2015, its full-year sales results have out-performed the peak of BMW’s original compact SUV that was more engaging to drive. And the latest X1’s best year of 4090 units (2016) is not far off...

There’s a reason the BMW X1 is the biggest selling premium compact SUV in the world. BMW got the packaging right, the size right, the performance right and the current X1, designed by Australian Calvin Luk, even looked right (a rare enough treat in the BMW range these days). It outsold the first generation comfortably and last year, in the last full year of...

I like it when a car subverts expectations. You see, I wasn’t expecting to like the X1 much. A BMW small SUV on a Mini Cooper platform? Sounds sketchy. It sounds like BMW is just playing a dangerous game of badge-swappery. Yet, after a week behind the wheel, I had to admit there’s more to the X1 than the numbers and specs might suggest. It admittedly won me...

What you are looking at here is the 2020 BMW X1 LCI in xDrive25i format. If you’re wondering what LCI stands for (I was), it’s ‘Life Cycle Impulse’ – BMW fancy talk for a midlife update. This ‘impulse’ brings a refreshed look for the X1, with a larger grille and redesigned air inlets and fog lights up front. At the rear, it’s been tweaked as well. New tail-l...

The BMW X1 is absolutely fantastic! ! The only trouble now is it’s like having Airconditioning and a Colour TV, once you have experienced it you always have to go back for more BMW’s !
