Now entering its sixth year on our shores, the BMW i3 is the German manufacturer’s answer to the growing prominence of electric vehicles. One of the main constraints to date regarding this fuel technology has been the limited driving range available before charging, however things have gotten better. BMW has increased range in the 94Ah following the introduction of a 33kWh battery a few years back, now offering 200km in real world operation. There is however, the option of range extender (REX) variants, which provide as much as 120km or so extra distance. Meanwhile, the 2019 120Ah model has an improved 42kWh battery, allowing for up to 260km distance as standard. Thanks to its lightweight design, the i3 is a hatch with nimble deftness and prompt acceleration. Sport configurations are available for each of the main versions, with a slight boost in power driving quicker movement, in addition to firmer suspension and wider wheels for more grip. It’s also a smart and futuristic looking hatch, with its compact size a delight to guide through narrow inner-city streets and difficult parking spots. The BMW i3 is offered as an all-electric car in its primary format, which is ideal for environmentally-conscious drivers or those looking to make the switch to a more fuel efficient vehicle. It does, however, also come with the option to include a standard petrol-powered engine alongside the battery motor, which is intended to increase the car's driving range, which may be a sticking point for some new car buyers.
For the time being, the i3 is still being sold in Australia, however, the German auto-maker has signalled that the end-of-the-line is nearing for this stylish electric hatch. First launched in 2013, the success of the BMW i3 has provided the company with extensive experience and knowledge to develop its next-generation of BMW electric vehicles. Production will cease at a global level in line with an ever-increasing number of new car buyers shifting away from pint-sized vehicles.
In overseas markets the battery used in the BMW i3 comes with an eight-year, 100,000 miles warranty, which has become fairly common within the industry in this day and age. That is equivalent to around 160,000 kilometres, or 20,000 kilometres per year. If you need any proof around the longevity of the i3 battery, however, you can just take one glimpse at some of the early models from this series, which are still driving around in good order, and retaining a high price in the second-hand car market.
