Abarth 124
A thrilling experience for those fortunate enough to scoop one up, the Abarth 124 Spider bowed out of the Australian new car market at the end of 2020. This car embodies all the best qualities that many of us have come to appreciate in its much better-known cousin, the Mazda MX-5. That’s because the Abarth 124 shares the highly-regarded chassis and platform found in the MX-5, and it leads to some unmistakable yet fun driving dynamics. Thanks to a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, which is capable of 125kW of power and 250Nm of torque, the Abarth 124 means business. It also scores highly for its sheer aesthetics and game-face, with this hot unit boasting a unique exterior that tantalises all the senses. Of course, it is also high in substance, and that means a host of premium touches inside the funky cabin. It’s always hard to truly appreciate how ‘alive’ a car can make you feel until you find that special ‘one’, but here, the Abarth 124 Spider does not need to serve up a reminder as to its riveting qualities, nor its place as a very genuine alternative to the Mazda MX-5.

What unfolded over five days of testing on...

When you take on a classic you’d better get it right. Which is why, back in 2016, when Fiat released a new 124, many an eyebrow was arched. The original was an icon from the late 1960s, the golden age of roadsters. Styled by Pininfarina, it also oozed Italian swagger and, to top it off, its double overhead cam engine (modern at the time) helped introduce a s...

When I first saw the official pictures of the Abarth 124 Spider I didn’t think much of them, not that I thought a lot of the ND MX-5. yet I’ve always been a huge fan of the NA MX-5. I completely changed my mind when I saw the Abarth in person, listening to the engine start up and hearing the optionally-fitted Record Monza exhaust. I couldn’t wipe the smile o...
