Weekly Dealer Car Enquiries – Sunday September 6

In this series, which we hope to bring to you on a regular basis, we’ll be detailing some of the key numbers and trends that we’re seeing in terms of dealer connections made through our site.

As this data is considered somewhat representative of broader industry activity, and serves as one of the more insightful leading indicators for potential car sales, we hope it will fulfil a few purposes for our broad audience. First, to document not just how we’re performing as business, but how dealers and the wider market stand to perform, so you don’t have to wait til that next set of official sales data.

Without further ado, here’s what happened over the last week.

Total new car enquiries

In the week ending Sunday, September 6, a total of 936 dealer connections took place via PriceMyCar. Compared with the week prior, ending Sunday August 30th, there was a 2.2% drop in the number of inbound enquiries from prospective new car buyers.

Supply disruption to states outside of Victoria continues to weigh on sales, however, the level of buying interest among consumers is relatively stable. With the JobKeeper and JobSeeker payments set to be wound back at the end of this month, there may be some caution in terms of broader consumer discretionary activity, albeit in many instances a car might also be deemed a necessity.

New car interest by brand

Ford had another sound week, maintaining its position in second place among the cars that our members are most-interested in. In fact, dealer connections relating to Ford vehicles closed the gap on those of Mazda, which has been atop the charts for several weeks now.

Toyota was another brand to record positive week-on-week growth, at what looks like the expense of Hyundai, where interest slumped 45%. There were also more-modest decreases for Volkswagen and Kia.

Stringing together a strong period of growth, however, is Isuzu, with interest in the brand now reaching some of the highest levels we would normally see outside EOFY.
