Weekly Dealer Car Enquiries: Sunday November 15

In this series, which we hope to bring to you on a regular basis, we’ll be detailing some of the key numbers and trends that we’re seeing in terms of dealer connections made through our site.

As this data is considered somewhat representative of broader industry activity, and serves as one of the more insightful leading indicators for potential car sales, we hope it will fulfil a few purposes for our broad audience. First, to document not just how we’re performing as business, but how dealers and the wider market stand to perform, so you don’t have to wait til that next set of official sales data.

Without further ado, here’s what happened over the last week.

Total new car enquiries

In the week ending Sunday, November 15, dealer connections were on the rise once again. In total, there were 1,788 new car enquiries via the PriceMyCar platform, which marked a week-on-week increase of 6.4%.

Given various announcements last week suggesting most state borders would be opening by the start of December, the news may be driving an uptick in new car queries as Australians prepare for a domestic holiday season involving road trips.

Elsewhere, business confidence jumped to its highest level since May last year, while consumer confidence was also higher according to the Melbourne Institute and Westpac Bank Consumer Sentiment Index for Australia.

New car interest by brand

Interest spiked in the likes of Kia and Ford last week, two brands which have been favourites among our members right throughout 2020. In the case of Kia, enquiries were up 20.4% on the week prior, while the increase was 29.9% for Ford.

Most other brands recorded comparable dealer connections from a week earlier, although BMW was a surprise packet among the rest of the field. New car queries relating to the German luxury brand rose 73.6% to a total of 92 for the week, one of the highest performances from the brand we’ve seen to date. That comes amid recent news the auto-maker is revising prices across its line-up for the second time in six months.
