Weekly Dealer Car Enquiries – Sunday June 28

In this series, which we hope to bring to you on a regular basis, we’ll be detailing some of the key numbers and trends that we’re seeing in terms of dealer connections made through our site.

As this data is considered somewhat representative of broader industry activity, and serves as one of the more insightful leading indicators for potential car sales, we hope it will fulfil a few purposes for our broad audience. First, to document not just how we’re performing as business, but how dealers and the wider market stand to perform, so you don’t have to wait til that next set of official sales data.

Without further ado, here’s what happened over the last week.

Total new car enquiries

In the week ending Sunday, June 28, PriceMyCar recorded 1,184 dealer connections.

This marks the second week in a row where new car buying interest has dipped, this time by a further 17.8% after declining 15% the week prior. Although general activity across the industry still remains somewhat optimistic compared with just a few months ago, rising COVID case numbers in Victoria may be a watch-point as to whether they keep new car buyers at bay.

The ongoing uncertainty surrounding government support packages such as JobSeeker and JobKeeper could also be having an impact, with many workers waiting for confirmation as to how long they will be entitled to benefits and in what shape these benefits may look like going forward. The government has designated July 23 will bring with it changes to the schemes.

It’s also worth noting that while EOFY is a traditional bumper period for car sales, much of the search activity takes place in the weeks preceding that, as we saw in the first half of the month.

New car interest by brand

Ford, Kia and Mazda saw interest decline sharply last week, as was the case with Honda, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Subaru. One of the beneficiaries, however, was Toyota. Inbound enquiries for the Japanese brand were up 17.2% compared with the week prior, helping lift it back into second place among the most sought-after vehicles through PriceMyCar.

Surprisingly, the level of interest in luxury brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen was buoyant, with two out of the three actually registering a higher volume of price quotes for our members. There was even one query that came through for a McLaren, illustrating that the top end of town is still open for business.
