In this series, which we hope to bring to you on a regular basis, we’ll be detailing some of the key numbers and trends that we’re seeing in terms of dealer connections made through our site.
As this data is considered somewhat representative of broader industry activity, and serves as one of the more insightful leading indicators for potential car sales, we hope it will fulfil a few purposes for our broad audience. First, to document not just how we’re performing as business, but how dealers and the wider market stand to perform, so you don’t have to wait til that next set of official sales data.
Without further ado, here’s what happened over the last week.
Total new car enquiries
In the week ending Sunday, December 13, we had 1,771 new car enquiries come through our portal here at PriceMyCar. This is the second week in a row where the total volume of queries has been lower than a week prior, this time down by 7.2%. However, new car buying interest remains quite active ahead of what is traditionally a good time for buyers to scope out potential bargains.
With consumer confidence at a 10-year high - something that few would think might be achievable amid the recession that followed COVID-19 - there is ample momentum for the new car industry to deliver another solid result after recent data showed that November was the first time after 31 months that new car sales grew.
New car interest by brand
Kia managed to retain the top position last week as the most sought-after brand, and in fact, eked out a small increase in enquiries. That came as second place Mazda also recorded positive growth in dealer connections for the week, but it was insufficient to help it move into leading place. Other brands that enjoyed a positive week were Honda, Subaru and Toyota.
On the contrary, the number of queries relating to Ford vehicles declined by about 11%, and as the year comes to a close, and businesses start to close their wallets for the year, there was a sharp drop-off in the number of connections made for Isuzu vehicles. In total, Isuzu leads were down by 37.4%, albeit the brand has seen record levels of interest over recent weeks. As a result of the decline in interest, the brand dropped out of the top six.
