Weekly Dealer Car Enquiries: May 2, 2021

In this series, which we hope to bring to you on a regular basis, we’ll be detailing some of the key numbers and trends that we’re seeing in terms of dealer connections made through our site.

As this data is considered somewhat representative of broader industry activity, and serves as one of the more insightful leading indicators for potential car sales, we hope it will fulfil a few purposes for our broad audience. First, to document not just how we’re performing as business, but how dealers and the wider market stand to perform, so you don’t have to wait til that next set of official sales data.

Without further ado, here’s what happened over the last week.

Total new car enquiries

In the week ending Sunday, May 2, there were 2,166 dealer connections across the PriceMyCar platform. Although down on the week prior, the drop was largely inconsequential, representing just 39 fewer enquiries. 

As we alluded to in our last report, the replacement public holiday for ANZAC Day in certain states also weighed on overall lead numbers, otherwise it is likely there would have been more numbers flowing through. 

More broadly, consumer sentiment remains particularly buoyant, which is one of the driving forces that we look towards for clarity over how the new car market is faring. 

New car interest by brand

The number of queries for Mazda and Kia vehicles rose strongly last week, with the duo actually coming in neck and neck in terms of being the most sought-after new car brands. Each brand recorded a total of 293 new car enquiries a piece, which is a record for Mazda, and one step closer for Kia to reclaim its former highs.

That strength came at the expense of several other brands, with the number of dealer connections for the likes of Honda, Hyundai, Isuzu, Mitsubishi and Subaru declining modestly.
