Weekly Dealer Car Enquiries: January 3, 2021

In this series, which we hope to bring to you on a regular basis, we’ll be detailing some of the key numbers and trends that we’re seeing in terms of dealer connections made through our site.

As this data is considered somewhat representative of broader industry activity, and serves as one of the more insightful leading indicators for potential car sales, we hope it will fulfil a few purposes for our broad audience. First, to document not just how we’re performing as business, but how dealers and the wider market stand to perform, so you don’t have to wait til that next set of official sales data.

Without further ado, here’s what happened over the last week.

Total new car enquiries

In the week ending Sunday, January 3, there were 1,644 new car enquiries across the board, illustrating a post-Christmas bounce in the new car market. While we are not reading too much into the fact that the number of dealer connections rose 83.9%, we are pleased to see that this number was back closer to the level from just before the Christmas break.

This indicates to us that new car buyers are still in an upbeat mood when it comes to looking for their next vehicle. What’s more, COVID border restrictions affecting New South Wales and Victoria have done little to dampen the appetite for a new car among motorists, which could be attributed to the fact that both states are seemingly on top of the respective outbreaks at hand.

New car interest by brand

With widespread interest accruing across nearly every brand last week, there were few brands that didn’t enjoy a bump up as buyers hopped onto the PriceMyCar website to search for their next car.

Isuzu made its way back into the top five brands, despite the fact that the government’s instant asset write-off tax break required motorists to take stock of a vehicle before the end of 2020. Nonetheless, the result may well show signs of underlying interest in the brand, as an alternative to utes from the likes of Toyota and Ford.
